Zoe Saldana made quite an impression as she hit the red carpet of this year's Met Ball in New York on Bank Holiday Monday.

Lighting up the red carpet

The Star Trek star ditched her red lycra ensemble in favour of a quirky black and white frock featuring a full skirt, halter neck and open back. The flowing number brought together monochrome tones and graphic prints. It was designed by Michael Kors, and the actress was so happy with him that she brought him along as her date!

Monochrome has been a prominent style for a while now, so Zoe's frock was bang on trend. Zoe wasn't the only star who was mad for monochrome; Margot Robbie, Gabrielle Union and Sarah Jessica Parker all donned black and white ensembles for the ball, too. We think it is safe to say this trend isn't going anywhere for a while!

What makeup for monochrome and prints?

Choosing the right hair and makeup looks to match prints can be easier said than done but Zoe absolutely nailed it! We loved her sparkling accessories and elegant updo.

As her dress was so striking, Zoe kept things simple in the beauty department with barely there makeup. Her choice of nude lipstick, smoky eyes and natural tones balanced out the look beautifully.

Get the look

You don't need a designer frock to create your own monochrome look. Copy Zoe's look with a black and white printed skirt, black halter neck top and some pretty heels. If the skirt has a statement print like Zoe's, take a leaf out of her book and keep your make-up subtle and sophisticated. Sweeping your hair into an elegant updo will highlight your natural features and show off your makeup!

For best results, choose greys and neutral tones to compliment kohl eyeliner around the eyes and finish off the look with nude lipstick.

So there you have it, you now know exactly which beauty look to match your monochrome printed dress. So, what are you waiting for?

Best Dressed At The Met Gala 2014: All The Dresses Live From The Red Carpet

Last night a little thing called the Met Ball took place over in New York. This year we were certain that the red carpet would be awash with pastel ball gowns and top hats, as the theme was 'White Tie and Decorations' to tie in with the exhibition which honours 50s designer Charles James. We had our money on satin gloves and sashes in a rainbow of Laduree shades. Turns out we were oh so wrong.

Co-chair Sarah Jessica Parker was the only one to follow the dress code and opt for satin gloves, which she paired with her giant Oscar de la Renta gown with his signature along the back. Taylor Swift stuck to the theme in a pale pink satin custom Oscar gown, as did Karen Elson in miles of pink satin Zac Posen. Suki Waterhouse had a 'You shall go to the ball moment' in blush Burberry ruffles, while Kendall Jenner was on theme in custom pink Topshop. You've got the idea - pink was the colour of the night.

With the 'White Tie and Decorations' theme we expected a sea of nipped in waists and blown out skirts, with minimalism not on the menu. But it looks like A Listers don't like a dress code - even if it's enforced by the mighty Anna Wintour.

The strapless column gown was a popular choice, led by Victoria Beckham who wore white strapless (you guessed it) Victoria Beckham. Rachel McAdams opted for a blush Ralph Lauren column gown, while Anne Hathway went for a red hot Calvin Klein Collection crop top and skirt.

Not all the stars were quite so simple, however. We come to Lupita Nyong'o who arguably gave us the biggest 'OMG moment' in her beaded flapper Prada cocktail dress. Last year Kim Kardashian almost broke the internet thanks to her floral Givenchy dress avec matching gloves, but she made up for it this year in blue strapless Lanvin with thigh-high slit.

Beyonce is always the queen of the Met Gala, and this year was no exception. She wore a black beaded Givenchy gown with a beaded veil and dark wine lips. She even walked the red carpet with a dress assistant who made sure the gown looked flawless at all times.

The red carpet this year was a Stella McCartney take-over, as she dressed the MET set. Rihanna wore a white Stella skirt and crop top, while Cara Delevingne wore white trousers and a black crop top. The designer also dressed Kate Bosworth and Reese Witherspoon in pink gowns avec trains. Crop tops might not scream white tie, but Emma Stone also flashed the abs in a pink Thakoon crop top with a wrap hot pink skirt with thigh slit.

5 Real Brides Reveal Their Biggest Wedding Day Surprise

Let's face it: No matter how much planning and preparation you put into your big day, there's bound to be a few surprises that pop up — for better or worse. From the aww to the aww sh*t, these five brides are confessing their biggest wedding day surprises.

An Unexpected Gift From Dad

"My biggest surprise was a gold coin necklace that my dad gave me right before we walked down the aisle. My now husband's dad had given it to me the day I was born when he and their family came to visit me. My dad had kept it in our safety deposit box all those years, and I never knew about it. It was such an amazing reminder that I was truly about to marry my soulmate!" — Sarah, 26

No Time to Eat

"My biggest wedding surprise was how I didn't get to eat any of our wedding food. I was expecting to sit down and have a meal with my new hubby, but between all of the guests it was such a whirlwind that it was time to go before we could enjoy our food. We ended up ordering room service later because we were so hungry." — Heidi, 28

It Went By Too Fast

"No matter how many people told me the wedding would fly by, I wasn't ready for it! Looking back, I felt like there were so many people that I don't know if I even said hello to them all. I had short term wedding memory loss, I guess because of the adrenaline." — Melissa, 26

So Many Emotions (and Tears!)

"My biggest wedding day surprise was probably how weirdly emotional I got before the ceremony. Everything was fine and I felt great. Then while I was getting my hair done and my sister asked me what sandwiches we were ordering for lunch, I suddenly felt a sea of emotions and just started crying in front of all my bridesmaids. They didn't really know what to do, and I had no idea why I was crying — scared, anxious, happy? Just too many weird emotions going on at once and they decided to come pouring out at that moment. I had no idea that would happen. I thought if anything I would cry at the ceremony, but I was totally calm and composed for that." — Vanessa, 27

A Last-Minute Change of Venue

"Everyone seems to get a kick out of this. I got married the day before a hurricane at the beach! The venue literally had to be changed two hours before the ceremony was supposed to start. I was amazed by how calm I remained. It's a lot of work for everything to change and then be over in the blink of an eye." — Megan, 29
