Aishwarya Rai outshines herself at Cannes

Being one of the most beautiful women in the world definitely has its perks, but lets not forget the downside of it – the constant media attention even in personal matters, the opinions from self-appointed fashion experts and of course the downright harsh criticism.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, a woman of grace and beauty has taken it all in her stride. With 2014, Aishwarya marked her thirteenth year at the annual prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Though her red carpet appearance was delayed, the actress made up for it with her jaw-dropping look at the French Riviera.

The former beauty queen picked a dazzling gold strapless mermaid-cut gown by Roberto Cavalli that showed off her curves like any proud Indian woman. Not only did it make Aishwarya Rai the talk of the town overnight but what’s interesting is that the actress has also made quite a few critics eat their words.

Two years ago, the mother-of-one was at the receiving end of much flak for her post-delivery weight. Quite a few write-ups mentioned her ‘double chin’, calling her weight gain extremely ‘shocking’.

While some from the industry came out in support of the new mother, others went to the extent of saying that women in India, tend to let themselves go after marriage and babies.

In 2012, few months after giving birth to baby Aaradhya, Aishwarya took a bold step by wearing a belted Elie Saab gown. It showed all her plus size curves, drawing mixed responses from critics. While some were in favour of her embracing her womanhood in all its glory, others thought gown made her look chubby and plump.

Another look from 2012, which did little to impress, was a cream chikankari Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla sari for the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala with an embroidered jacket, which was also received as a complete fashion disaster.

Many compared her to the likes of Victoria Beckham and said that she should take a leaf out of the Posh girl’s book and regain her figure as soon as possible.

In 2013, Aishwarya once again favoured designer Elie Saab with a beautiful black and grey couture gown, which Aishwarya wore to the premiere of ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’.

But, yet again the beauty didn’t seem to get it quite right when it came to her ethnic looks on the red carpet. Her black and gold embroidered sari-lehenga by Sabyasachi which she donned for the evening gala of ‘Bombay Talkies’ celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema was said to be quite a disappointment.

And her gold on gold look – Tarun Tahiliani’s sari for amfAR’s Cinema Against AIDS 2013 was

Cannes Film Festival 2014 fashion

Blake Lively followed up her gorgeous Gucci gown of the previous evening with an equally stunning embellished Giambattista Valli mini-dress for an appearance on Le Grand Journal TV show.

Zoe Saldana, who appeared alongside Blake on the show, also kept it short in a lace Valentino frock. The ooh-la-la dress seemed to be modelled on a French maid’s outfit with a pussy bow collar and monochrome palette.

Earlier in the day, Kendall Jenner had been spotted showing off her model pins by the beach in a beige Longchamp playsuit and Chanel trainers before stopping off for some lunch and a glass of bubbly at the Hotel Du Cap-Eden-Roc.

These shorter lengths stole the show on a day when few impressed on the red carpet. Before their TV appearance, Blake and Zoe had both attended the premiere of Mike Leigh’s Mr Turner in slightly fussy, full length gowns.

Blake picked diaphanous Chanel this time and her dress featured the same waist-cinching band worn most notably by Keira Knightley at the Chanel show back in March. The dress failed to have the same impact as the Gucci gown Blake wore on the first night though – the combination of a low cut top and sequins made it feel more Soap Awards than South of France.

Having said that, we do love a dress with pockets.

Zoe Saldana’s red carpet look also failed to excite. She opted for a green velvet Jason Wu design which had more than a whiff of the 90s about it with its coordinating scarf and bias cut skirt.

Slightly more successful was Julianne Moore who went for a vampy Louis Vuitton dress with a burgundy leather t-shirt top and feathered black and white skirt. It’s a great dress and the actress looked incredible (is she really 53?), yet it felt like a slightly incongruous choice for the warm climes of the Mediterranean.

Cate Blanchett, however, showed she’s the consummate red-carpet professional in a striking Valentino gown. She was in Cannes to attend an annual event hosted by jewellers Chopard and she didn’t limit the bling to those incredible pink diamond shrimp earrings.

Her dramatic grey dress also sparkled with silver leaf detail and embellished cap sleeves. You can always rely on Cate.

Cannes Film Fest 2014 Best and Worst Dressed

Fashionably speaking, the Cannes Film Festivalis like the Oscars--10 days in a row. It's go big or go home! But when big is done wrong, it's stillgo home.

Unfortunately there will always be some of those misses throughout the two-week long festival, but we'll also be pleasantly surprised by many amazing looks--As proven today during the Opening Ceremony.

While Blake Lively made burgundy look royal on the red carpet, Karlie Klosslooked like she wrapped up in a pair of drapes that were once hanging from her window sill.

Blake is absolutely stunning in an oxblood, chiffon Gucci gown. The geometric neckline adds a chic touch to the young actress' look, while the high slit and open back creates that bit sexiness we love seeing on her. She accessorizes with a pair of gorgeous Lorraine Schwartz ruby drop earrings and two diamond bracelets. But my absolute favorite aspect of the look is her long, messy braid, which adds the perfect finishing touch to her overall appearance!

Well done!

With all the good, there's bound to be a bad egg, and unfortunately for Karlie Kloss, it's her.

While I totally admire Karlie's drive to be different in this Valentino tri-color lace gown, it ages her. She has such a hot, little body, she should be wearing something that shows it off! But this does it absolutely no justice... Proving sheer isn't always sexy.
